People often ask me “So, why Reproductive Rights?”
Actually, as of late it’s happened A LOT.
And truthfully, I have no personal experience that’s driven me to fight for something I didn’t have access to or was too afraid to seek or couldn’t afford to seek. I’ve always had an open and honest relationship with my parents and my sexual partners about my use of contraceptives. I’ve always lived in states where access to contraceptives and abortion has been fairly easy. I had a VERY comprehensive sex ed class - my teacher demonstrated how to use pretty much any contraceptive device you can think of, even the outdated ones - and was assertive and confident enough in myself to use that knowledge I was given. I’ve never had an abortion.
But that doesn’t matter. It shouldn’t matter. Choice - from the choice to educate yourself about sex and the choice of the method of contraceptive you use and the choice to have children or not have children or have a child and give it to someone else are all so PERSONAL that it’s hard for me to not get involved when the government tries to step in.
There’s not an easy way to answer this question. There are so many reasons I have that have driven me to want to essentially make the rest of my life about abortion and contraception and sex education, but I think one of the reasons that I want to do this is because I’ve had it so easy that I want everyone to have the same experience as I did. I don’t want my future child to live in a world where women that seek these things are categorized as whores or selfish or any other negative connotation that is attached to responsible sexuality.
So, I chose this for myself and even though at times I’m incredible disheartened, I know that people like me will always be needed in this country as long as we continue to extend our moral ideals onto others. And in the happy event that choice is no longer an issue in the US, there are plenty of other places I’ll be needed.
Reblogged because, although I’m not going to work in reproductive rights, this perfectly encapsulates my feelings on the topic. Highlights in bold are my own. This is great, Meg. (Also, cc: Laura and Kait, because duh.)
